Binomial Distribution

What is it

The binomial distribution models the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, each with the same probability of success — such as the number of heads in 10 coin flips.

Why it matters

The binomial distribution is one of the most widely applicable models in statistics, used anywhere there's a fixed number of yes/no trials — quality control, clinical trials, and opinion polling all rely on binomial reasoning.

Exam tip

Before using the binomial distribution, explicitly check the three conditions are met (fixed number of trials, only two outcomes, constant probability) — many exam questions deliberately include scenarios where the binomial model doesn't actually apply.
